Hither Green Signalling Project, Lee Substation to Mottingham

Description / Scope of works:

On behalf of Balfour Beatty Rail and the Hither Green signalling project, Seva have undertaken and completed thousands of metres worth of route works for both HV and signalling cables. Route works that have consisted of conventional ground laid concrete trough, buried / ducted station platform route and elevated arco GRP. None of these route works have proven to be more challenging than the elevated section of arco GRP, signalling power cable route – Run 49. Running for 700m between Lee Substation and Mottingham Station.

It was not only the large meterage that needed to be achieved within the 4-week deadline. There was also the challenge of working behind the vortok fencing which proved a very tight workspace. Large volumes of arco trough and components, concrete and duct had to be transported and stored on site in just two weekend possession shifts with the aid of RRVs and a lot of manpower.   Again, the tight worksite proved a challenge in just storing these materials in safe and accessible areas.

Once actual installation works commenced, there was constant management involved to ensure the site teams were always working under the correct SSOW and protection. Multiple systems including fenced, separated, and planned line blockages were put in place and implemented, sometimes daily, to enable teams to move safely through sections of the worksite. Huge credit must go to our site leads and safety critical staff for enabling us to complete these works not just on time and to a high standard but most importantly; safely. Not only for their actions on site but also the key roles they played in feeding back information to enable the correct systems to be put in place and ultimately keep the works running safely and efficiently.

Although an extremely challenging job logistically, our installation teams once again delivered a scope of works that are of the highest quality, safely and on time.
